Pete won't accept defeat!

Lean On Pete gallantly defended his crown by winning the 1m4f handicap at Beverley for the second year running.

Given a typically strong ride from Andrew Mullen, Lean On Pete proved he doesn't have to lead to win, by tracking the leader throughout, taking up the running turning in and battling on for a hard fought victory, to win by a head at the line.

Ollie was at the track and said of the horse, "This was his 74th race and his ninth win. Since this time last year, where he stumbled coming out the stalls, lost his jockey and ran loose at the head of the field, his attitude in races has changed - before, he used to curl up under pressure, now he battles hard. His love for life and racing is remarkable really. He is a wonderful horse to have in yard."

It proved to be a promisiing day for the OPR team at Beverley, as Spanish Beauty ran a good race to finish a close fifth on her first start for 270 days, Mr C was a staying-on third in his first handicap and Roaring Rory, aka Mr Consistent, was a fast-finishing third in the concluding 5f handicap, at what was a pretty wet afternoon on the Westwood.
